Changing Careers: Project Management
I'm after a bit of advice from anyone who's currently a qualified PM.

I'm looking at jumping ship from Web Application/Dev to IT Project Management as I'm bored of coding after over 15 years.

Been using Agile for the last couple of years and have run several projects using it.

I'm looking at taking the CAPM, PMP, PMI Agile and Prince 2 Foundation courses, anything else I should look at?

Cheers in advance.

Scud,

Depends how you dress it up. If you volunteers it was a bit of this but not much, then will be received as such.

Just show some balls and say you managed the project fully. Then answer the questions sensibly (after all you manage budgets, risks and issues all the time in your everyday luge so just apply that in a business context).

There's a million and one bad PM's out there so don't get hung up on the qualifications and things.

Dress your experience up, get the interviews going, get a role and learn in it.

The war office had trained and worked as a scientist at Kew Gardens, sensed the writing was on the wall with the government cut backs and managed to wangle an IT secondment assisting in PM work and started working for her Prince. Was let go by Kew a few weeks Back but has now been offered 2 positions doing PM work for a different organisation She enjoys it, but is a very organised bird (I would be shit at it). She reckons if you get a good good team to work with it’s doddle, but some of the nutty mad Scientists she had to work with caused her no end of grief, which in turn effected delivery on the project. Prob not much help, but good luck.

I work in finance but am lead for testing for new platform software. I prefer this to my actual finance role which is Team Leader for Asset Recs. Id like to get in to a BA/QA role ideally. I hear the ISTQB (think that's right?) is a good place to start!

That's where I think I might run into a bit of trouble.

I've got some project management experience working as a senior developer but never actually held a PM job.

How favourably do you think it'll be looked upon with that bit of experience and then taking the qualifications to move career path?

Re: Changing Careers: Project Management
We've got a lad working here with the title 'Project Manager'.

He must only be about 23/24 years old.

His role seems to consist of sitting in on various meetings with other 'Project Managers' where they all tell each other what needs to be done against a certain deadline, which will never be met.

Ten a penny in the Insurance game.

Chuck your CV over if you want. Shouldn't be too much trouble getting you in.

Re: Changing Careers: Project Management
Experience over the qualification will always be the way.

I'm a BA currently doing a Microsoft Dynamics CRM project....seems to be a lot of work in that space, but am also a bit bored of the work itself.

Pays well though so hard to justify jacking it in for something else.

It what im trying to get into and waiting on a job actually.

That come as a recommendation rather than experience.

Not a bad shout, it's something worth considering for the future.

At the moment I don't want to invest too heavily into anything it as I'm a fickle bastard and might decide that I don't like PM work after a year or two.

No problem, the more the merrier.

From the research I've done getting the professional qualifications seems to the be route to go down.

That and a bit of networking over Linked In etc.

What about becoming a Change BA - say working on a MIFID/MIFIR programme - or similar?

Re: Changing Careers: Project Management
Project Management is easily transferable - the whole point of the different types of PM is that they're a framework rather than instructions.

As said below, Prince2 is good to have on your CV as it's the one everyone knows of (and thus looks for), but wouldn't bother going any further than Foundation if you're targeting IT Project Management. I've got that and Practitioner and have never run a project here to the complete Prince2 methodology because some parts just aren't needed with what we do

Re: Changing Careers: Project Management
I'm considering this as well actually. (Project management) At the moment my skills are very niche and completely London centric. I would like to get into a line of work with skills that can be widely transferred. Are there lots of opportunities around for qualified project managers?

Sorry to hijack the thread Scud!

Please outline your experience in Project Management?

I don't know much, but I know I'd Sprint to Push your Backlog as you are one saucy Scrum-my bugger. When do I start?

Re: Changing Careers: Project Management
PRINCE is still regarded quite highly and it's good to have it on your CV either way and if you're doing the foundation only it will be a piece of piss

Isn't Prince2 dying on it's arse since the advent of AGILE though?

I was only going to do the foundation as a little extra.

That's an easy one, just guff on for 5 minutes about full life-cycle project delivery, add a couple of obstacles that were overcome and how it all worked out. wonderfully.
